Needle & Knot
An identity for a hand-embroidery studio making personalised keepsakes, built to feel personal, poetic and enduring.
OVERVIEW
Personal. Precious.
Needle & Knot is a hand-embroidery studio making keepsake pieces, starting with jumpers personalised with a name. The identity had to feel rooted in family and guided by quiet elegance, and hold up from a woven label to a future studio shop.
CHALLENGE
Standing apart from machine-made personalisation.
Personalised children's clothing is crowded, loud and largely machine-embroidered: bright colours, exclamation marks, "adorable custom merch".
Needle & Knot needed to read as a keepsake, not a novelty, to gift-givers who notice how a thing is made.
STRATEGY
The maker's mark, not a file number.
Every name is drawn, threaded and stitched by hand, and the brand makes that the point. Four commitments guide every decision: by hand, always; quiet elegance; made for keeping; and personal by design.
Each one is written to be checked: it should be answerable with a yes before a piece leaves the studio.
SYSTEM
Single-colour by design.
An ampersand at the heart of the mark, binding needle and knot like a well-tied thread. One colour at a time, so it's as easy to stitch, emboss and print as it is to read. A soft palette held to strict ratios, so the brand stays calm.
Colour
Warm Ivory, Cannoli Cream, Soft Yellow, Dusty Rose, Sage Green and Charcoal. Mostly ground, very little accent: tip the ratio and it starts to look like a party supplies shop.
Typography
IvyMode for headings, its curves echoing the motion of thread. Lato for everything else: clean, legible and quietly contemporary.
Icons
A drawn set at one stroke weight, never filled. One icon per surface.
Voice
Warm but unhurried. Specific about craft, quiet about sentiment: the piece carries the emotion, so the copy doesn't need to insist on it.
IN USE – PRINT
The parcel is the shop
Until there's a studio shop, the unboxing is the brand. A charcoal box, ivory tissue and a sage ribbon, with two printed pieces: a care card and a woven label.
One handwritten line on the care card, the customer's name and the maker's initial, is treated as part of the product, not an extra.
IN USE – DIGITAL
A place, not a poster.
Online, the studio shows its work before its words. Social posts rotate between work, words and wares, with two photographs for every typographic post.
Product pages and captions keep the same unhurried voice: "Eight letters, one afternoon, and a very patient cup of tea."
TAKEAWAY
Values only work if you can check a decision against them.
Each of the four commitments is written as a test, not a slogan. That's what keeps a small, personal brand consistent as it grows from a parcel to a shop.
